Aerobic Systems
Efficient On-Site Treatment
Aerobic treatment systems are on-site sewage treatment systems that use forced air to treat wastewater and surface application or drip irrigation to disperse the treated wastewater. They may also be used to replace subsurface systems that are failing due to high groundwater and/or poor soil. While aerobic systems may be designed without performing a soil test, it is recommended that a soil profile be performed at the site. Based on the results of the soil profile, you may be able to reduce the size of the dispersal field or install a subsurface system.
To determine the type of soil at your location please contact your local DEQ office. All aerobic treatment units must be certified as meeting the most current ANSI/NSF Standard 40, meaning they have been tested to prove that the unit is going to operate as the manufacturer claims.
DEQ Aerobic Septic System Regulations
Per Oklahoma DEQ statutes, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to maintain their Aerobic Septic System to the standards linked below. Visit DEQ’s website for further information.
Lateral Lines System
Durable pipe layout
Many of our daily chores such as bathing, doing laundry, flushing toilets, preparing meals, washing dishes and other activities generate domestic wastewater. Few people give thought to where wastewater goes after it disappears down the drain. Domestic wastewater (i.e. sewage) must be properly treated because it contains nutrients, bacteria/viruses and household chemicals that may contaminate the land and waters of our state. In the U.S., we are fortunate to have the technology and the resources available to properly treat our wastewater.
Each subsurface sewage treatment system is designed for a specific site and a specific volume of wastewater. Each site is different and must be evaluated individually. Site evaluation information includes: soil characteristics (amount of sand, silt, and clay), landscape, lot size and location, estimated water usage, depth of the groundwater tables (both seasonal and permanent), water well locations (yours and your neighbors’), location of creeks, rivers, springs, ponds and lakes, or other factors that may affect the location and size of your system.
DEQ Lateral Line Septic System Regulations
Oklahoma DEQ requires a soil test for lateral line septic systems because local soils often make lateral dispersal unsuitable; aerobic systems do not require a soil test. Read the DEQ regulations for details and guidance.
Our Most Common Questions Answered
Septic FAQs
Have questions about septic systems? Find quick answers to common concerns about installation, warranties, inspections, and maintenance.
Aerobic systems must be serviced every 6 months to assure that the system is getting the proper airflow and that the bacteria are present to properly treat the wastewater.
The word aerobic simply means “air.” Aerobic systems work by saturating the wastewater with oxygen. This allows aerobic bacteria to form. This aerobic bacteria then feed on the micro-organisms and organic matter in the wastewater. This process is what eliminates the odor.
Pump your septic tank regularly- before a problem shows up!
According to Fast Plumbers, lateral line systems should be pumped every 4-6 years. This will slow the build-up of biological growth, referred to as Bio-Mat, which builds up in lateral lines, causing them to fail. Aerobic Systems should be pumped every 2-5 years.
- Garbage disposals should be used sparingly. Scrape as much food debris off into the trash as possible. Heavy garbage disposal usage will require having the tank pumped twice as often.
Tip: Continue running water for 30 seconds after turning off the disposal. This reduces the likelihood of sink odor. - Space out laundry loads over the course of the week. A load or two per day, rather than back-to-back loads on Saturday allows your system to better process the incoming wastewater and reduces the chance of overloading the system.
- Use only liquid laundry and dishwasher detergents. Powdered detergents use a type of clay base as a “carrier.” This clay base solidifies on the walls of your pipes.
- Water conservation is important. Low volume showerheads, faucets and toilets and being “water-conscious” can easily reduce the load on your septic system by 50-60 gallons a day- that’s about 20,000 gallons per year!
- Fix leaky faucets or running toilets immediately. If you have a two-way sewer cleanout in your yard (usually a white pipe sticking up a few inches, just a foot or two away from the house) you can easily check for leaks by looking down into the two-way cleanout pipe.
- No mop water, harsh cleaners, baby wipes, diapers, medicines, paper towels, feminine products, condoms, coffee grounds, cigarette butts, grease, automatic toilet bowls cleaners, paints, stains, thinners, pesticides, kitty litter or anything else that might harm the good bacteria in your septic system.
The Department of Environmental Quality “DEQ” regulates septic installation in Oklahoma and mandates that each aerobic septic system come with a two year manufacture warranty along with four septic maintenance visits over a two year period. (two visits per year for two years.) Choosing an experienced installer who is certified through DEQ will insure that your warranty and services are provided.
We do not require a deposit for any septic system installation at this time.
Full payment of shelter is required upon installation. We accept cash, checks, Visa and MasterCard.
